His story is relayed in the third person omniscient perspective through the eyes of the child as well as an elder. It takes place during the Civil War in a southern town.In Ambrose Bierce’s short story “Chickamauga”, he initially represents a romantic view of war in the limited focal viewpoint of the mute and deaf child. The fact that the child is mute and deaf symbolizes two aspects of human society in relation to violence as a spectacle.
Leo Tolstoy’s The Death of Ivan Ilyitch and Ambrose Bierce’s Chickamauga are prime examples of the contrast of principles that can be found in the literature of these two periods. Ambrose Bierce. (1842-1914?) One of his gothic Civil War stories, “Chickamauga” follows a little boy only 6 years old from his cabin as he wanders onto the battlefield nearby. His perceptions of horrific sights he does not understand are rendered in an Expressionistic style very original for the time.
